Juan José Ganuza has officially assumed his role as president of Spain's National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC). During his inauguration, Ganuza emphasized the institution's independence and its commitment to making rigorous, science-based decisions, even if they do not satisfy all stakeholders. He identified key challenges for his six-year term, including the transition to an artificial intelligence-driven economy, merger control, and balancing energy market regulations with climate change goals.

Simultaneously, the CNMC is managing a critical regulatory deadline regarding SMS, MMS, and RCS sender identification. To prevent fraudulent messaging, telecommunications operators will be required to block all alphanumeric sender aliases that are not officially registered starting September 15. As of early September, over 13,500 aliases have been registered, with approximately 6,000 more pending approval.

To mitigate potential service disruptions, the CNMC has granted a temporary grace period, or ‘amnesty,’ for companies that have already submitted their registration requests but are still awaiting formal authorization. This measure allows trusted providers to continue using their registered aliases while their applications are processed, though the regulator has clarified there will be no further extensions to the primary registration deadline.
