Juan Lebrón, Andalusian Film Producer, Dies at 73
Juan Lebrón, a pioneering Andalusian film producer, died on Monday, 3 August, at the age of 73. Born in Antequera in 1953, he built a career that documented Andalusia’s festivals, music, architecture and everyday life, creating a visual archive of the region’s cultural heritage.
His most celebrated works include the documentary series Sevillanas (produced for Expo ’92), Flamenco (1995, later shown at the Venice Film Festival) and Semana Santa, which captured the spectacular rituals of Seville’s Holy Week. The mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, said of Lebrón’s death, “Con él se marcha parte de la memoria de la Sevilla del siglo XX a color.”
Lebrón began as a camera operator for Televisión Española, contributing to programmes such as El Hombre y la Tierra and Verano Azul. He later produced award‑winning films that earned the Rose d’Or, a Silver Rose at Montreux, and an Emmy nomination. His final project, Andalucía Monumental, was a eight‑part series on the region’s monumental heritage. He had travelled to more than a hundred countries, gathering footage that enriched his extensive archive, now regarded as a valuable cultural resource.
