Juan Moreira legend endures in Buenos Aires province

The 19th‑century gaucho Juan Moreira remains a vivid symbol in the Buenos Aires pampas. After a series of confrontations with police between 1870 and 1874, he was wounded at the La Estrella tavern in present‑day Lobos while trying to escape a wall, an episode that has entered local folklore.

Moreira’s story is celebrated through the “Caminos de Moreira,” a trail that links towns such as Cañuelas, General Las Heras, Lobos, Marcos Paz, Navarro, Roque Pérez and San Miguel del Monte. The legend is also kept alive in literature; Eduardo Gutiérrez’s gauchesque novel *Juan Moreira* was serialized in *La Patria Argentina* from November 1879 to January 1880. The narrative reflects the turbulent political climate of the era, marked by the rivalry between nationalists led by Bartolomé Mitre and autonomists under Adolfo Alsina.
