Juan Pablo Segura appointed U.S. Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs
Juan Pablo Segura has officially assumed his role as the Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, following his nomination by President Donald Trump and confirmation by the U.S. Senate. Segura succeeds Michael Kozak, who had been serving in an interim capacity.
Segura, a Republican businessman and former Virginia Commerce Secretary, has outlined several strategic priorities for the region. These include combating organized crime and narcoterrorism, securing U.S. borders, and fostering economic prosperity for the United States and its regional partners. He has also expressed a commitment to the Monroe Doctrine to restore American preeminence in the hemisphere and counter the influence of external actors, specifically China.
The appointment comes during a period of heightened diplomatic tension between the United States and Brazil. Recent friction points include disputes over commercial tariffs, the revocation of the visa of Brazilian Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, and an impasse regarding the appointment of Daniel Perez as the new U.S. Ambassador to Brazil.
