Juan Sebastián Verón vows to return to play if Estudiantes reaches 100,000 members

Juan Sebastián Verón, 51, who serves as president of Argentine club Estudiantes de La Plata, has pledged to train and play an official match if the club’s membership hits 100,000. The current campaign, launched to boost the fan base, aims for 70,000 members by the end of 2026 and 100,000 by 2030; the club counted about 56,000 members earlier this year.

Verón previously kept a similar promise in 2017, when he returned to the field for the Copa Libertadores after the club sold a large share of stadium boxes. He retired as a player in 2014, became Estudiantes’ president the same year, stepped down in 2020 and was re‑elected in 2024. The new pledge was sparked by a social‑media challenge from a supporter asking whether he would play a Libertadores match if the target were met.
