Juan Tamariz, legendary Spanish magician, dies at 83
Spanish illusionist Juan Tamariz has died at the age of 83 in Madrid. His death was confirmed by his daughter, fellow magician Ana Tamariz, who stated he passed away peacefully from natural causes at the Hospital Clínico San Carlos.
Tamariz was a global icon in the field of close-up magic and cartomagic, recognized for his unique blend of technical mastery, humor, and improvisation. He gained widespread popularity through Spanish television, notably on programs such as ‘Un, dos, tres... responda otra vez’ and ‘Tatatachán’. Beyond entertainment, he was a significant theorist and educator, co-founding the Gran Escuela de Magia in Madrid and authoring influential books like ‘Mnemónica’.
His career spanned over six decades, during which he received numerous honors, including the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in Spain and the FISM World Cartomagic Award in 1973. He was also noted for his early interest in cinema, having directed short films such as ‘El espíritu’ in the late 1960s. Tributes from fellow magicians and cultural figures have highlighted his role in making Spain a central hub for the art of illusion.
