Juan Villoro receives Carlos Fuentes International Literary Prize

Writer and journalist Juan Villoro has been awarded the 2026 Carlos Fuentes International Prize for Literary Creation in the Spanish Language. The award was presented at the Palacio de Bellas Artes by Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, rector of UNAM, and Claudia Curiel de Icaza, Mexico’s Secretary of Culture.

During the ceremony, Villoro expressed gratitude to Silvia Lemus, the widow of Carlos Fuentes, for her role in preserving the late author’s memory. Villoro reflected on his relationship with Fuentes, noting their shared dialogues regarding Mexico City, revolutionary movements, and the condition of marginalized populations. He also emphasized the necessity of increased public funding for science, culture, education, and health.
