Juana Santiago Chel Released from Hospital After Contested Eviction in Guatemala

Juana Santiago Chel, an elderly Ixil woman, was discharged from a hospital in Nebaj, Quiché, after being treated for injuries sustained during a forced eviction carried out by the Guatemalan National Civil Police (PNC). The eviction, ordered by a judge, sparked widespread outrage, violent protests, and the burning of the judge Ada Madaí López Morales' home. Santiago Chel was transferred to her daughter's residence to continue recovery while legal actions against the police and officials involved are being prepared. Authorities have not announced any specific investigations into the alleged misconduct.

The incident has intensified national debate over police procedures and property disputes in the region, with the judicial system defending the judge while condemning the attacks on her property.
