Juchitán municipal government dissolved after mayor's arrest

The municipal government of Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca, has been dissolved following the arrest of Mayor Miguel Sánchez Altamirano. Sánchez Altamirano and an associate, Carlos Alberto 'La Parka', are in preventive detention facing charges of aggravated extortion and crimes against national security. Authorities suspect the former mayor had links to the local criminal group 'Los Cromos' and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

In response to the crisis, the Oaxaca State Congress dissolved the local council, and Governor Salomón Jara appointed Francisco Vásquez Jiménez, a local fire chief, as the provisional municipal commissioner. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the federal government is coordinating with state authorities to stabilize the region and has increased the presence of the National Guard in the area.

To restore order, Governor Jara announced the formation of a new municipal police force and the installation of security arches and surveillance cameras. Additionally, the state has temporarily taken custody of the local police's weaponry pending the formal update of administrative records under the new administration. Security in the municipality is currently being bolstered by the Mexican Navy, the National Guard, and state special forces.
