Judge Ada Brown suspended amid misconduct and mental health probe

U.S. District Judge Ada E. Brown of the Northern District of Texas has been temporarily removed from receiving new cases and had her existing caseload reassigned following an investigation by the Fifth Circuit Judicial Council.

The council's order, disclosed on October 19, indicates that Brown may suffer from a mental condition that interferes with her judicial responsibilities. A special investigative committee reported a substantial backlog of 78 undecided motions and noted that Brown had recused herself from more than 40 cases since June 1, often without explanation or for reasons deemed unusual.

Allegations detailed in the investigation include making inappropriate racial insults to judges and court staff, sending “copious and bizarre emails” to colleagues at irregular hours, and disseminating confidential materials regarding the proceedings against her. The council concluded that the reassignment of her cases was necessary for the effective administration of justice.
