Judge blocks Trump administration from tree removal at D.C. golf course

U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes has issued a preliminary injunction extending the block on the Trump administration’s efforts to remove or damage trees at the East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C. The ruling prohibits further tree removal while a lawsuit challenging the renovation plans proceeds through the court system.

In her 70-page opinion, Judge Reyes required the government to provide at least 10 business days' written notice before making any “irreparable modification” to the park’s features. The judge noted that the administration must also provide 24 hours' notice and a sworn declaration if they intend to address an “imminent threat” to the area.

The legal dispute follows the recent felling of more than 400 trees at the century-old course. Judge Reyes criticized the administration, noting a disconnect between President Trump’s social media statements regarding an “immediate” overhaul of the site and the testimony provided by Department of Justice attorneys. The D.C. Preservation League and local golfers are among those challenging the project, arguing that the planned transformation into a championship-level course violates the National Environmental Policy Act.
