East Potomac Golf Links renovation sparks legal battle in D.C

A legal dispute has intensified between the Trump administration and local preservationists over the proposed redevelopment of the East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C. The administration plans to transform the 106-year-old public course into a championship-caliber venue designed by architect Tom Fazio, with construction potentially beginning as early as November 5, 2026.

U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes has expressed skepticism regarding the government's actions, noting that the administration appeared to act in “bad faith” after cutting down approximately 400 trees over a holiday weekend despite ongoing litigation. The judge also highlighted contradictions between the Justice Department's legal filings, which claimed no definitive plan existed, and President Trump's social media posts announcing a finalized redesign and a November 15 closure date.

The D.C. Preservation League and local golfers have sued to halt the project, arguing the overhaul violates a congressional act designating the area as a public park. They express concerns that the renovation will replace an affordable public amenity with an expensive destination, making it inaccessible to ordinary residents. In response to the litigation, President Trump has characterized the site as “trash island,” citing images of debris and dilapidated infrastructure to justify the necessity of the work.
