Lindsay Clancy: Judge denies motion for not guilty verdict

A Massachusetts judge has denied a defense motion to find Lindsay Clancy not guilty in the case involving the deaths of her three children in January 2023. Judge William Sullivan rejected the renewed motion filed by attorney Kevin Reddington, which argued that prosecutors failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

In his ruling, Judge Sullivan stated that both physical and circumstantial evidence presented would allow a rational jury to find Clancy guilty of murder. The judge further noted that “mental illness alone does not preclude a finding of criminal responsibility beyond a reasonable doubt.”

The defense has centered its argument on Clancy’s mental state, claiming she suffered from severe postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings. While prosecutors acknowledge her mental health struggles, they maintain she understood the wrongfulness of her actions. The case has sparked significant debate regarding the legal and moral implications of postpartum psychosis and infanticide.
