New York City sanctuary laws upheld by federal judge

U.S. District Judge Ramón E. Reyes Jr. has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration seeking to overturn New York City’s sanctuary laws. The ruling, issued in the Eastern District of New York, found that the federal government lacked the legal standing to challenge municipal policies that limit cooperation between local agencies and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The judge ruled that the city’s restrictions on sharing information regarding the release dates or whereabouts of immigrants are valid, noting that federal law does not mandate such disclosure. Furthermore, the court held that the administration’s attempt to compel local assistance would violate the Tenth Amendment’s anti-commandeering doctrine, which prevents the federal government from forcing states or cities to use their own resources for federal enforcement duties.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani celebrated the decision, describing it as a victory for New Yorkers and a rejection of federal efforts to turn municipal employees into deportation agents. The lawsuit, originally filed by the Department of Justice in July 2025, argued that the city’s policies obstructed federal immigration enforcement and were unconstitutional.
