Judge dismisses Trump $10 billion defamation lawsuit against Wall Street Journal

A federal judge in Miami has permanently dismissed Donald Trump’s $10 billion defamation lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal and Rupert Murdoch. The ruling, issued by U.S. District Judge Darrin Gayles, was made with prejudice, meaning the claims cannot be refiled.

The lawsuit centered on a July 2025 report regarding a 2003 birthday note allegedly sent by Trump to Jeffrey Epstein. The report described a sexually suggestive message featuring a hand-drawn illustration of a nude woman. Trump has consistently denied writing, drawing, or signing the letter, calling the reporting a fabricated smear.

Judge Gayles ruled that Trump’s legal team failed to meet the high legal standard of “actual malice” required for public figures to win defamation cases. The court found that the newspaper conducted a detailed investigation and included Trump’s denials within its reporting. The judge rejected arguments that the publication should have withheld the story following Trump’s denials, noting that such a requirement would conflict with First Amendment protections for press freedom.
