Judge Edinaldo Muniz discharged after Acre bridge collapse
Retired judge Edinaldo Muniz has been discharged from a hospital in São Paulo following a two-month hospitalization caused by the collapse of the Frei Paolino Baldassari Bridge in Sena Madureira, Acre. The accident occurred on June 5, when approximately 60 percent of the 332-meter structure fell while four people were on it.
During the collapse, Muniz suffered traumatic brain injury, as well as abdominal and kidney injuries, requiring nine surgical procedures. After initial treatment in Rio Branco, he was transferred via air ICU to a specialized neurosurgery hospital in São Paulo. While discharged, he remains in São Paulo to undergo intensive rehabilitation and physiotherapy.
The Acre Court has ordered the freezing of assets belonging to Construtora Cidade Ltda., the company responsible for the bridge, up to the amount of 36 million reais. The company claims the collapse was caused by riverbank erosion, noting they had previously warned of soil movement and cracks. Meanwhile, the Public Ministry of Acre has requested a technical inspection by DNIT to investigate potential flaws in the project or materials used.
