Judge Gjoko Ristos denies money‑laundering charges in North Macedonia

Appeal Court judge Gjoko Ristos began his criminal trial in Skopje on 28 May 2026, insisting he is not guilty of the two charges against him. Prosecutors allege that Ristos concealed €350,000 in cash hidden behind a wall in his parents' house in Negotino. The money was found in 13 packages, comprising 610 banknotes of €500 and 225 banknotes of €200, some marked with handwritten amounts. The indictment alleges that Ristos gave false statements about his assets, failed to report the funds, and used the house to launder the cash, violating his duty to disclose financial holdings. The defence argues that the money was legally obtained by Ristos's parents and will present forensic and financial expert testimony to prove legitimate ownership. The case is being overseen by judge Biljana Kozevska, with a next hearing scheduled for 9 June. The proceedings spotlight alleged corruption within Macedonia’s judiciary.
