Judge Gustavo de Castro Campos found dead in burning car in São Paulo

Gustavo de Castro Campos, a 45-year-old judge from the São Paulo Court of Justice (TJSP), was found dead inside a burning Volvo XC60 in a rural area of São João da Boa Vista on Wednesday night.

The vehicle was discovered on the Euclides Dotta dirt road, which provides access to Fazenda Aliança. A witness operating a backhoe attempted to extinguish the flames by throwing soil over the car, unaware that someone was inside. After the fire was controlled, authorities found the judge's partially carbonized body in the driver's seat.

Preliminary forensic investigations revealed a container with a strong odor of gasoline near the pedals, and the body also emitted a strong smell of fuel. However, investigators noted no immediate signs of gunshot or knife wounds, nor any apparent marks of violence. No objects appeared to have been stolen from the vehicle.

The Civil Police are treating the case as a suspicious death and have opened an inquiry to determine the cause. The judge, who served in the 2nd Court of Mococa, had a career that included ten years as a lawyer and a period as a Civil Police delegate in Espírito Santo. The TJSP issued a statement expressing solidarity with his family.
