Judge Hellerstein issues protective order in Nicolás Maduro criminal case
U.S. federal Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein has issued a protective order to regulate how evidence in the criminal case against Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro is managed and disclosed to the defense.
The order requires the prosecution to provide exculpatory and impeachment material to the defense while implementing strict restrictions to prevent leaks. The judge noted that certain evidence could impact personal privacy, compromise ongoing investigations into uncharged individuals, or cause public exposure that could prejudice the case.
A significant portion of the evidence consists of electronic data obtained from computers and mobile devices belonging to Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. This material will be classified as Attorneys' Eyes Only (APO), meaning it can only be possessed by defense attorneys and their authorized staff. Under this classification, the accused are prohibited from physically possessing the material, except while reviewing it in the presence of their legal counsel.
The protective order will remain in effect even after the criminal proceedings conclude, with the court retaining jurisdiction to enforce its terms.
