Judge imposes deadlines on Trump memorial arch project

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has introduced several notification deadlines that complicate the timeline for the construction of a memorial arch proposed by the Trump administration. The order requires the National Capital Planning Commission, the National Park Service, and the Department of the Interior to notify the court within one hour of any decision regarding the project.

Additionally, the judge mandated that defendants provide notice within thirty minutes of any activity related to or in preparation for the construction on Memorial Circle. The court warned that any construction or demolition occurring before final agency action or without 14 days’ notice would violate previous orders.

The legal challenges include a lawsuit filed by three Vietnam veterans and an architectural historian, as well as separate lawsuits from the District of Columbia and Virginia seeking a temporary restraining order. Judge Chutkan has consolidated these cases and established a joint briefing schedule.
