Judge links relaxed food program rules to Feeding Our Future fraud

A federal judge has determined that relaxed enrollment provisions in a child nutrition program made the system ‘vulnerable to fraud.’ The findings were included in an appellate filing by Aimee Bock, the convicted leader of the Feeding Our Future nonprofit in Minneapolis.

Feeding Our Future was central to a conspiracy involving more than $240 million in stolen federal COVID-19 relief funds, marking one of the largest schemes to exploit pandemic-era programming. The organization enrolled numerous bogus businesses as food distribution sites, retaining a 10% to 15% administrative fee from their reimbursement checks.

U.S. Magistrate Judge David Schultz linked the widespread abuse to pandemic-era waivers. These waivers were part of the Maintaining Essential Access to Lunch for Students Act, legislation sponsored by Representative Ilhan Omar in 2020. The act aimed to provide student lunches outside of traditional school settings during COVID-19 shutdowns by relaxing registration requirements for non-school-based caterers.
