Barcelona court moves three Mossos officers toward trial over Puigdemont escape

The Audiencia of Barcelona reopened the investigation into three Mossos d'Esquadra officers on 7 July 2024 after appeals by Hazte Oír and Vox. The magistrate transferred the case to the Ministerio Fiscal and ordered that the prosecutor file formal accusations within ten days.

The judge concluded there are sufficient indications of a coordinated effort by the officers to help former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont flee Barcelona on 8 August 2024, despite a standing Supreme Court arrest warrant. Video and internal police reports show the officers surrounding Puigdemont at very short distance, physically assisting him through the crowd, an action described by the force as “encapsulamiento”.

The conduct may constitute an offence under article 408 of the Spanish Penal Code, punishable by six months to two years of special disqualification from public office. The three Mossos are now a step away from trial.
