Three Mossos officers processed over Carles Puigdemont's August 2024 escape
The Audiencia of Barcelona ordered the reopening of the case against three Mossos d'Esquadra officers on 7 July 2024 after appeals by Hazte Oír and Vox. The judge transferred the investigation to the Ministerio Fiscal and gave the parties ten days to submit a formal accusation. The magistrate concluded there were sufficient indications of a coordinated effort by the officers to help former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont evade a Supreme Court arrest warrant during his visit to Barcelona on 8 August 2024. Video evidence shows the three officers surrounding Puigdemont at very short distance and physically assisting him, an action the police describe as “encapsulamiento”. The court noted that the conduct could constitute a crime under article 408 of the Spanish Penal Code, punishable by a six‑month to two‑year special disqualification from public office. The three officers are now a step away from trial.
