Judge Sentences Attacker to 20 Years for Brutal Beating of Italian Student

In a Milan court, Judge Alberto Carboni sentenced Alessandro Chiani to 20 years in prison for attempted murder and robbery after the 12 October assault on university student Davide Cavallo. The beating, which lasted just 21 seconds under the arcades of viale Monte Grappa, left Cavallo with severe, potentially paralytic injuries requiring lifelong medical care. The judge emphasized the “coldness and cynicism” of the perpetrators, noting that Chiani laughed when told the victim might become permanently disabled, writing, “Le parole di Alessandro Chiani … agghiacciante disumanità” and “la reazione … è stata quella di continuare a ridere.” The court also ordered a provisional €500 000 payment to cover Cavallo’s immediate medical expenses. Co‑defendant Ahmed A. received a ten‑month sentence for omission after charges were reduced.

The sentencing reflects the judiciary’s condemnation of extreme violence and the long‑term impact on the victim’s family.
