Judge threatens Donald Trump with sanctions in BBC defamation suit
Magistrate Judge Enjolique A. Lett has threatened Donald Trump with sanctions if he fails to comply with a court order to sit for a deposition in a $10 billion defamation lawsuit he filed against the BBC.
The lawsuit stems from a BBC ‘Panorama’ documentary regarding the January 6, 2021, Capitol protests. Trump’s legal team alleges the network maliciously doctored his speech to distort his message, while critics argue the documentary was misleading by omitting certain context.
Trump’s lawyers stated he has ‘no availability whatsoever’ before the discovery period ends on December 18, citing matters of national importance. The BBC has filed a motion to compel the deposition, and a hearing has been scheduled for October 22.
