Judi Dench announces retirement from acting due to vision loss

Dame Judi Dench, the 91-year-old Oscar-winning actress, has announced that she can no longer perform in films, plays, or read due to deteriorating eyesight. In a recent interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Dench shared that her condition has reached a point where she can no longer fulfill the professional demands of acting.

Dench has lived with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) since her diagnosis in 2012. The condition, which affects central vision, has increasingly impacted her daily life, making it difficult to recognize faces and even see certain colors, such as blue. She described the experience of mistaking strangers for acquaintances as a frequent occurrence.

Despite the challenges, Dench noted that she is attempting to adapt to her circumstances. She previously mentioned relying on friends to read scripts to her and using her photographic memory to learn lines. Her storied career spans over seven decades and includes iconic roles such as M in the James Bond franchise and her Academy Award-winning performance in Shakespeare in Love.
