Judicial corruption and human trafficking cases result in prison sentences

In Syria, the Court of Cassation has sentenced a judge to eight years in prison following convictions for bribery and influence peddling. The Syrian Ministry of Justice announced that the ruling includes a fine of 36 million new Syrian pounds, along with civil deprivation. The decision followed the judge's dismissal and an investigation by the Supreme Judicial Council into criminal violations that undermined the prestige of the judiciary.

In a separate legal matter, the Amman Court of Appeal upheld a three-year prison sentence and a 5,000 dinar fine for a man convicted of human trafficking. The defendant was found to have lured a financially vulnerable individual to Turkey under the promise of $10,000 in exchange for a kidney donation. After the surgical procedure was completed, the perpetrators failed to pay the victim, leaving him to cover his own travel expenses back to Jordan.
