Judicial delays in Honduras and Mexico legal disputes over cultural symbols

In Honduras, the Supreme Court of Justice has once again postponed the discussion of an amparo resource regarding Romeo Vásquez Velásquez. Judicial spokesperson Melvin Duarte stated that pending issues and limited time prevented the matter from being addressed during the recent session. The case, which has seen no progress since July, involves the former head of the Armed Forces who remains a fugitive after failing to comply with a preventive detention order related to the death of Isy Obed Murillo.

In Mexico, a legal dispute involving Grupo Xcaret and the use of Maya symbols has returned to the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN). The Maya community is seeking a final, unappealable ruling from the Court rather than a federal tribunal in Mexico City. While a recent ruling denied Xcaret a definitive suspension that would have allowed them to maintain their websites without blocks during litigation, the Court may still attract the case to issue a final decision regarding the use of indigenous symbols.
