Spain approves 700 new judicial and fiscal positions for 2027

The Spanish Government has approved the urgent processing of two royal decrees to create 700 new judicial and fiscal positions by 2027. This expansion includes 500 new judge positions and 200 new prosecutor positions, representing a 7.8% increase in the judicial workforce and a 6.6% increase in the Ministry of Public Prosecution.

The new roles will be distributed across various jurisdictions, with 172 positions for civil law, 109 for social law, and 69 for criminal law. Additionally, the plan includes 87 positions for mixed bodies, 42 for territorial assignment, 11 for violence against women, and 6 for violence against children and adolescents.

Geographically, Catalonia and Andalusia are set to receive the highest number of new judges, with 94 each. Madrid follows with 74, and the Valencian Community with 53. In terms of prosecutors, Catalonia will receive 47, followed by Andalusia with 31 and Madrid with 26. The Canary Islands will see the highest percentage growth in its prosecutorial staff at 8.9%.

This initiative is part of the Judicial Efficiency Law, which utilizes a new model of 'courts of instance' to reduce costs. Under this model, creating a judicial position costs approximately 100,000 euros, significantly lower than the 500,000 euros required under the traditional single-judge court system.
