Judicial leaders discuss international justice and ICJ representation

Liberian Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti has called for increased cooperation between Liberia’s judiciary and diplomatic services to secure the nation’s first seat on the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Despite being a United Nations member since 1945, Liberia has never had a judge serve on the ICJ bench. Nyanti emphasized the need to groom jurists with expertise in international law and build diplomatic support within the African Group to achieve this goal.

In a separate regional development, judicial officials from Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and the International Criminal Court (ICC) convened in Freetown for a seminar focused on combating impunity. The event, supported by the European Union, addressed the relationship between the ICC and national courts. Discussions centered on strengthening domestic judicial institutions to investigate and prosecute serious international crimes, ensuring accountability and protecting victim rights under the Rome Statute.
