Judicial leadership changes in Kenya and political tensions in South Korea
In Kenya, Chief Justice Martha Koome and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) have appointed new chairpersons and members to six specialized tribunals. These bodies oversee competition, energy, industrial property, standards, micro and small enterprises, and retirement benefits. Key appointments include John Joseph Wamwara for the Standards Tribunal, Valentine Mwende Mulwa for the Competition Tribunal, and Doris Kinya Mwirigi for the Energy and Petroleum Tribunal. Most terms are set to begin in September 2026.
In South Korea, tensions have escalated between the judiciary and the presidency. Chief Justice Jo Hee-de broke with custom by nominating a Supreme Court candidate in writing following a months-long deadlock with the Blue House. This friction follows previous controversies, including Chief Justice Jo’s reported opposition to President Yoon Suk Yeol’s December 2024 martial law declaration and allegations regarding the speed of the Supreme Court’s decision in the election-law case involving Lee Jae Myung.
