Judicial leadership qualities sought for Uruguay Supreme Court presidency

As current Supreme Court President Orlando Aguirre decides not to seek a second term, discussions have emerged regarding the ideal profile for the next judicial leader in Uruguay.

Magistrate Damaris Vargas, who is temporarily assuming the presidency and is a candidate for the permanent role, emphasized that the successor should ideally possess managerial training to oversee an institution of the Judiciary's magnitude. She noted that while the president manages the institution, strategic decisions remain the responsibility of the 22 magistrates comprising the Full Court.

Additionally, Jorge Cartín, representing the Judicial Power Workers Union (Sitrajud), joined the call for a leader characterized by dialogue, the defense of judicial independence, and a commitment to workers. The consensus among stakeholders highlights the need for open leadership capable of building agreements and maintaining constant communication with various sectors and the citizenry.
