Judicial Police Director Carlos Cabreiro addresses use of force in Lisbon

During a lecture on integrity and corruption prevention at the Padre António Vieira Secondary School in Lisbon, the Director of the Judicial Police (PJ), Carlos Cabreiro, responded to a student's question regarding whether he had ever killed anyone with a service weapon during his career. Cabreiro jokingly remarked, “I have played Playstation and I have killed someone on Playstation,” before clarifying more seriously that while he has used his weapon, he has fortunately never killed anyone, though he noted that members of the PJ have had to shoot suspects in the past.

The session, attended by approximately 200 students, shifted focus from corruption prevention to questions about police activity and recruitment. Cabreiro also addressed institutional accountability, stating that the PJ must sometimes investigate its own members for errors.

These comments occur amid an internal audit of the institution regarding company contracting and the management of seized assets, particularly during the tenure of his predecessor, Luís Neves. Cabreiro himself is currently a suspect in a case involving alleged perjury and abuse of power related to the Football Leaks investigation.
