Orlando Aguirre will not seek reelection as Supreme Court President

Orlando Aguirre, President of the Supreme Court of Justice, has announced that he will not seek reelection to the position. His current term is set to conclude on September 26.

Aguirre stated that his decision was made with a view toward the future of the institution. While stepping down from the presidency, he will continue to serve as a magistrate in the Second Chamber. His announcement follows a period of significant tension between the Judiciary and the Executive branch, including public questioning of his continuity by President Laura Fernández and Minister Rodrigo Chaves.

The departure of Aguirre opens the process for the Full Court to elect a new president for the next four-year term. Aguirre noted that his tenure was marked by challenges regarding judicial independence and the need for the institution to adapt to modern societal needs and technologies.
