Honduras ratifies seizure of $4.2 million in Mobile Hospitals case
The Honduran Court of Appeals has ratified a ruling to seize more than $4.2 million in assets linked to the “Mobile Hospitals” case. The decision confirms the forfeiture of funds held in United States bank accounts under the name of ELMED Medical System Inc., belonging to Guatemalan citizen Axel Gamaliel López Guzmán.
The funds originate from controversial COVID-19 pandemic era purchases made between March and April 2020, involving seven mobile hospitals and seven water treatment plants. Investigations revealed that the state made 100% advance payments without following legal contracting requirements or technical specifications.
This ruling marks a significant milestone for the Honduran justice system as the first sentence of its kind involving the international recovery of assets. Once the sentence is final, the state will seek international legal assistance from United States authorities to repatriate the funds.
