Judiciary initiatives target case backlogs in Uganda and Trinidad and Tobago
In Uganda, the Court of Appeal reported 60 successful mediations between January and October 2026 as part of an effort to reduce case backlogs through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). During a review meeting in Kampala, officials noted a steady increase in requests for mediation referrals. While 171 mediation attempts were unsuccessful, the program aims to expedite case disposal and improve access to justice.
In Trinidad and Tobago, Chief Justice Ronnie Boodoosingh announced plans to upgrade court facilities and improve case management following the 2027 budget allocation. Priority projects include upgrades to the San Fernando Supreme Court, the Family Court in San Fernando, and facilities in Tobago and O’Meara. The Judiciary is also expanding Virtual Access Court Rooms (VACCs) and prioritizing the resolution of long-standing criminal cases, some of which have remained on the docket for over 20 years.
