Ghana judicial staff threaten indefinite strike over salary delays

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has threatened to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike starting November 2, 2026. The industrial action is a response to government delays in approving and implementing a 2026 salary and allowance review.

JUSAG is demanding that the government approve recommendations from the Judicial Council by October 31. The association also seeks the payment of revised salaries in November, including arrears covering the period from January to October 2026. JUSAG noted that while other public sector workers received their 2026 adjustments in January, judicial staff remain unpaid, which has impacted morale.

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has intervened to avert the strike, directing the Minister for Jobs, Labour and Employment Relations to lead negotiations between the government and the association. Citing Section 161 of the Labour Act, 2003, the NLC has advised JUSAG to suspend its planned industrial action while discussions are facilitated. The Commission has requested a report on the outcome of these engagements by November 6, 2026.
