Judith Godrèche directs film adaptation of Annie Ernaux’s Mémoire de fille

Director Judith Godrèche has released ‘Mémoire de fille’, a film adaptation of the autobiographical novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Annie Ernaux. The film explores Ernaux’s memories of the summer of 1958, during which she experienced a traumatic sexual encounter while working as a camp counselor.

Godrèche cast her daughter, Tess Barthélémy, in the lead role to portray the 17-year-old version of Ernaux. The production aims to capture the historical reality of the era, including the lack of female solidarity under patriarchal influence, and the long-term physical and psychological consequences of the trauma.

The film’s release coincides with broader cultural discussions regarding the personal and political nature of Ernaux’s writing, which often uses memory to reclaim control over past experiences. Godrèche has noted personal parallels between the film’s themes of reclaiming one's narrative and her own experiences with the film industry.
