Judith Godrèche leads French #MeToo spotlight at Cannes

In May 2024, a group of women placed their hands over their mouths on the steps of the Cannes Palais des Festivals to symbolize the silencing of sexual‑abuse victims in France. Actress and emerging director Judith Godrèche participated in the protest while presenting her short documentary "Moi aussi," which compiles testimonies from more than two thousand survivors.

Godrèche also publicly accused directors Benoît Jacquot and Jacques Doillon of sexual abuse she suffered at ages 14 and 15. Her allegations triggered a wave of new testimonies, prompted scrutiny of the César Academy, and forced the French film industry to confront a long‑standing culture of impunity. Later that year she premiered her first feature, "Memoria de chica," an adaptation of Annie Ernaux’s novel, at the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest in Spain, further highlighting the intersection of personal narrative and broader societal debates about consent and power in cinema.
