Judith Pape-Greif researches weight stigmatization in parents
Judith Pape-Greif, a researcher at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, is studying the experiences of overweight parents. Her dissertation in social work explores the phenomenon of “weight stigmatization” and how it affects family life and parenting perceptions.
Pape-Greif interviewed ten parents—six mothers and four fathers—to understand their daily struggles. One participant, Jolyn Muijsers, shared personal accounts of social exclusion, such as being unable to use roller coaster safety bars and avoiding beaches due to self-consciousness. Muijsers also described the psychological pressure to be an exemplary parent to counter the assumption that her weight reflected a lack of control over her children.
The research highlights a common pattern of social observation and judgment directed at overweight parents. Pape-Greif intends to publish her findings in a book following her current parental leave.
