Judith Raupp chronicles life in Goma, Congo
Journalist Judith Raupp has released a reportage titled ‘Morgen gehe ich einkaufen, wenn der Markt noch steht’, detailing her life in Goma, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Raupp, who has lived in the region for fifteen years supporting NGOs, provides a perspective on the city that contrasts with common media depictions of Goma as solely a hub of conflict and smuggling.
The book explores the daily lives of residents amidst the backdrop of volcanic activity from Nyiragongo, epidemics, and ongoing militia violence. Raupp describes the presence of groups such as the FDLR and the Rwanda-supported M23, noting the brutal nature of recent invasions, including a 2025 conflict that resulted in 3,000 deaths in its first three days. Despite the instability, the narrative highlights moments of community and friendship within the city.
