Judy Ong film ‘Sunshine Women’s Choir’ to release in Japan

The Taiwanese film ‘Sunshine Women’s Choir’ (Japanese title: ‘陽だまりの歌が聴こえる’) is scheduled for a nationwide release in Japan on January 1, 2027. Directed by Gavin Lin, the film was a major success in Taiwan, earning over 3.86 billion yen at the box office and receiving accolades such as the Audience Award at the 28th Taipei Film Festival.

Set in a women’s prison, the story follows a mother, Hui-jen, who gives birth while incarcerated. Facing the threat of her daughter losing her sight, she decides to place the child for adoption to ensure her future. To create a lasting beautiful memory before their separation, Hui-jen and her fellow inmates form a choir. The film explores themes of domestic violence, economic hardship, and the bonds formed through music.

Notably, this marks the first time Judy Ong has appeared in a Taiwanese film in 47 years, since her 1979 hit ‘Miserable’. She portrays Yu-ying, a character who leads the choir. The film is a Taiwanese remake of the 2010 South Korean movie ‘Harmony’ and is inspired by true events.
