Jujube production and market interest rise in Turkey
Jujube production, often referred to as the ‘immortality fruit,’ is seeing increased activity and consumer interest in Turkey. In Edirne, retired farmer Kenan Kırca has expanded his cultivation to 120 trees across 1.5 decares. Due to favorable rainfall and pruning, Kırca reported a nearly 20 percent increase in yield this year.
In Nazilli, the fruit has become a prominent fixture in local markets like the Perşembe Public Market. Vendors report growing demand as consumers become more aware of the fruit's nutritional benefits, including high levels of vitamins A and C, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium.
Jujubes are sold both fresh and dried, with prices ranging between 80 and 150 lira. Beyond direct consumption, the fruit is used to produce jams and vinegar. There are two main varieties available: a smaller type and a larger, grafted variety.
