Jujuy environmental center landfill reaches 75% completion

Construction of the second sanitary landfill at the Centro Ambiental Jujuy (CAJ) has reached 75% progress in its first two cells. The project aims to ensure the safe disposal of non-recoverable waste once the lifespan of the initial landfill, built in 2017, is exhausted.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Leandro Álvarez, inspected the site, noting that cell 2 is 95% complete and is expected to be operational by the first half of January. Current works focus on soil waterproofing using heat-sealed membranes to prevent leachate from infiltrating the ground, alongside the installation of extraction piping for these liquids.

The new facility will cover approximately six hectares and is designed to have a total capacity of 800,000 cubic meters across four cells, with an estimated useful life of 10 years. While cells 1 and 2 are well underway, cells 3 and 4 are currently pending the bidding process. Additionally, infrastructure improvements including paving and lighting are being implemented in the nearby El Triangulito neighborhood in Palpalá to improve access to the center.
