Jujuy government develops prevention plan for El Niño

The Government of Jujuy has convened scientists and officials to develop a prevention plan in response to the El Niño phenomenon. Led by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the initiative aims to transform scientific data into government action through the Climate Table, a space within the Interministerial Cabinet of Climate Change.

Experts from the National University of Jujuy (UNJu), the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA), and the Provincial Directorate of Vegetation Fires and Environmental Emergencies participated in the meetings. The goal is to address climate scenarios and provide concrete responses to mitigate potential impacts.

Specialists noted that El Niño effects are not uniform across the province due to its unique geography. While widespread rainfall is not expected throughout the entire province, forecasts suggest potential drought in the Puna region and convective storms in various areas. These storms could concentrate large volumes of water in short periods, potentially causing flooding and disrupting local communities, production, and infrastructure.
