Argentina lithium sector expands with major international investments

Argentina is seeing significant expansion in its lithium sector, driven by major international investments and new industrial projects. In the Salar del Hombre Muerto region, POSCO Argentina has inaugurated Plant II of the Sal de Oro project. This facility, representing a $954 million investment, is designed to produce 23,000 tons of lithium carbonate annually for export.

Other major developments include Rio Tinto's commitment to launch a lithium pilot plant in the Cauchari salt flat starting in 2027. Additionally, Rio Tinto is advancing the Rincón project in Salta, which involves a projected $2.7 billion investment and aims for a production capacity of 50,000 tons of lithium carbonate annually.

In Salta, Eramet is planning an additional investment of approximately $300 to $350 million to expand its Centenario-Ratones project, which could increase annual production from 24,000 to 35,000 tons. Meanwhile, Galan Lithium is preparing to inaugurate its Hombre Muerto Oeste plant with an initial capacity of 5,000 tons per year. These projects are supported by the Régimen de Incentivo para Grandes Inversiones (RIGI), as Argentina aims to reach a lithium production of 400,000 tons of LCE by 2030.
