Jujuy police forcibly evict indigenous community in Humahuaca
Police and infantry forces conducted a violent eviction operation against the Santa Rosa indigenous community in Humahuaca, Jujuy province, on Monday. The operation resulted in at least 10 injuries from rubber bullets and the demolition of three homes using heavy machinery.
Community members reported that officers used tear gas and fired rubber pellets at close range, affecting children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. There are also reports of approximately eight minors being removed from the site during the incident. Angel Mendoza, vice-president of the Santa Rosa community, stated that belongings were thrown out and houses were destroyed by an unregistered machine.
Local activists and community members allege the eviction is driven by real estate and tourism interests in the Quebrada region, noting that the land is highly valued in dollar terms. The community claims the police action, occurring amidst cadastral errors and administrative disputes, serves to facilitate private investment and capital arrival at the expense of ancestral lands.
