Julia Jacklin releases fourth studio album ‘The Gem’

Musician Julia Jacklin has released her fourth studio album, titled ‘The Gem’, under the 4AD label. Moving away from her previous practice of recording in different international locations, Jacklin recorded this project in Melbourne at Rat Shack, a studio located above The Gem pub.

The production process involved a significant delay; after initially completing a version of the album in ten days, Jacklin rejected the finished product because she felt the musical choices were influenced by what she thought others would want to hear. She spent an additional eleven months working with producer Robert Muiños to refine the record.

Musically, the album expands Jacklin’s established indie rock and pop sound by incorporating more rhythm, texture, and diverse arrangements. The tracks range from heavy indie rock and electronic pulses to delicate folk and piano-led ballads, utilizing instruments such as the Wurlitzer and a close-recorded rhythm section to create a sense of space and tension.
