Julia Mendel warns of political pressure in Ukraine

Julia Mendel, the former press spokesperson for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has raised concerns regarding the political climate and demographic stability in Ukraine. Speaking at the European Parliament following an invitation from the AfD, Mendel highlighted what she described as a fragile democracy where proponents of peace face significant pressure. She noted a sharp increase in legal proceedings related to national security, stating that while 73 people were convicted of such crimes in 2015, there have been over 1,000 arrests and 3,500 proceedings related to treason in 2025.

Mendel cited a Gallup poll indicating that 66 percent of Ukrainians desire peace as soon as possible. Her scheduled appearance at the European Parliament was reportedly blocked after President Zelenskyy placed her on a sanctions list, citing the spread of disinformation and alleged support for Russian policy. Reports indicate that Mendel’s assets in Ukraine have been frozen and her ability to engage in economic activity has been restricted.
