Julian Alaphilippe announces immediate retirement from professional cycling

French professional cyclist Julian Alaphilippe has announced his immediate retirement from professional cycling at the age of 34. The two-time world champion (2020, 2021) confirmed the decision via social media, stating that he had decided to end his career following the 2026 Tour de France. Although he held a contract with the Swiss team Tudor Pro Cycling until 2027, he chose to step away now, noting that he had followed his instincts to decide when the time was right.

Alaphilippe’s career is marked by significant achievements, including victories in Milan-San Remo, Strade Bianche, and three editions of La Flèche Wallonne. He also secured six stage wins at the Tour de France and held the yellow jersey for a total of 18 days throughout his career. His departure marks a notable transition in French cycling.

Colleagues and fellow riders, including Mathieu van der Poel, have paid tribute to his attacking style and personality. Alaphilippe expressed immense gratitude toward his fans and the cycling community, stating, “I gave everything I had, and cycling gave me everything in return.”
