Julian Alvarez seeks move from Atletico Madrid to Barcelona after rejecting contract

Julian Alvarez, the 26‑year‑old Argentine World Cup winner, has told Atletico Madrid he wants to leave the club before the summer transfer window closes. He rejected an offer to extend his contract with a €10 million net‑salary deal that would have made him the highest‑paid player at Atletico.

Alvarez has named FC Barcelona as his preferred destination, although the Spanish giants face significant financial hurdles. Barcelona are reportedly willing to explore creative solutions, such as player swaps, but may need to free up wage space after Robert Lewandowski’s departure. Sources say a deal would likely exceed £100 million, with Atletico expected to ask for at least €150 million despite a €500 million release clause.

Other clubs, including Arsenal and Paris Saint‑Germain, have also shown interest, but Barcelona remains Alvarez’s top choice. The situation leaves Atletico facing the prospect of losing one of its marquee forwards, who has scored 49 goals and provided 17 assists in 106 appearances since joining in 2024.
